Kusadasi
I'm doing an Ephesus tour with an 8:15am start. It's really the perfect weather for this kind of tour. About 18C, overcast but dry. It's about a 30 minute drive on quite a winding road. The bus lets us off at the top of the site, and our tour takes us down. We have an excellent guide called Gengis. He is a history teacher, and this is his 2nd job.
It's hard to describe Ephesus, it's so impressive, and so large, and with so much history. I walked around and marvelled and tried to just let it sink in. Our tour included the Terrace houses, a fairly recent excavation where they are still piecing things together. We had a short talk from an archaeologist who has worked on this site, very exacting work, much like a giant puzzle. In the theater someone demonstrated the acoustics, amazing. In an other area there was a short re-enactment with gladiators, fun to see. We were at Ephesus for about 3 hours. Lots of walking, and lots of steps. I loved it, but it would be hard for those with limited mobility.
We then drove back to Kusadasi and went to a carpet shop for a demonstration of the weaving. Very intricate work all knotted by hand. They have silk, wool and cotton as well as blends of all. And yes I bought one. I hope I'll still like it when it arrives!
The sun starts to come out as we depart so I decide to have a swim. The pool is warm, but the breeze is cool once you get out! Dinner tonight is a special Turkish menu, and the show is featuring the music of Elton John. I'm looking forward to both!
This is quite a trip--so much to see and learn. Sounds wonderful! --Carla Burgason
