Getting ready to go




We're still in the pandemic, but travelling is certainly opening up! I'm eager to get out there not only because I've really missed travelling, but also I want to be able to let my clients know what it's like with the ever changing restrictions.
I decided on this Azamara cruise for several reasons. First of all it's a fabulous itinerary, and all the ports of call are new to me. (other than Athens) Also, Azamara Pursuit is a small ship, less than 700 passengers, so less crowds. There are overnight stays in Alexandra, Ashdod, Haifa and Istanbul. I'm getting a glimpse of these countries ,I'm sure I'll be back some day!
And I'm able to fly fairly directly, 1 change on the way there and non-stop on the way back.
Neither Greece or Turkey requires testing as long as you're fully vaccinated, but Azamara not only requires vaccination including booster, but a negative test prior to boarding as well.
Travelling is more stress-full these days, and some things like packing that use to be second nature seem more complicated!

    Be sure and go to the famous spa in Istanbul. I still dream about that. It was wonderful. I'll look up the exact name.

  We transited through the Dardanelle Straights at night, but I woke up several times to see the lights in several towns and a huge bridge. In the morning we had reached the Sea of Marmara and were heading for Istanbul. A cloudy day but no rain so far. This is the coldest day we've had, only about 15C. There are a lot more ships here, mainly freighters. Istanbul is a huge city, about 16 million official inhabitants so it's very spread out. It's a very exciting sail in trying to spot some of the famous buildings like Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque. As we're circling around to dock the Moslem call to prayer is sounding all around us. Limassol Cyprus

 We had a bit of rock and roll last night, I felt it rocked me to sleep! My cabin location is fairly low and central, so pretty stable. A beautiful sunny day as we arrive into Limassol harbour. I had decided yesterday to book a shore excursion for Cyprus and I'm so glad I did! The drive to Omodos took about an hour, and went from the coastal plain through winding hills , terraced vineyards and small villages. Cyprus is divided between the Greeks and the Turks, we were on the Greek side. Omodos is one of many wine villages, and a popular spot for people from Limassol to come for Sunday brunch. It's really charming with it's winding streets, small shops and many restaurants. The Greek Orthodox church is very ornate and beautiful with some Russian icons and by tradition a piece of the rope that bound Jesus's wrists. Azamara Pursuit

We had a 1pm pick-up from our hotel to the cruise dock in Piraeus. About a half hour drive. We were quite early at check-in but they were all set up with the boarding process which of course is complicated because of Covid. We went through several steps, had our Covid tests (negative, yeah!) and checked in. The pier was experiencing internet problems, so longer than usual, but still onboard by 3pm. Cabins and luggage were ready too! I'm in a Veranda cabin, very well laid out and spacious especially for 1 person! After unpacking I toured the ship, similar to other Azamara ships I've seen, but a few updates. I really enjoy this size of ship (just under 700 passengers) Big enough to have everything you want, but not overwhelming. It's always interesting departing from Piraeus, so many different sizes of ferries and cruise ship. Masks are recommended inside when social distancing isn't possible.
