Journey to Athens


 

A long day!

I flew on Turkish Airlines Vancouver to Istanbul , 3 hour connection then 1 hour to Athens. Flight was almost full. Good service and comfortable aircraft, but hard to get any sleep on a flight that full. Istanbul airport is very large, but very efficient. A good airport to connect in with no customs or security for most connecting flights. They even have outside terraces and nap areas with comfortable lounge chairs.

Evening arrival in Athens, and I was glad I had pre-booked a transfer for the 40 minute drive to the hotel. One nice thing about arriving at night is that there isn't much traffic. A quick check-in at the Hera hotel then out for a glass of wine and snack with Dorian & Jessie. Complete with view of the Acropolis. In bed by about 10:30pm

Next morning after a good sleep, a nice buffet breakfast with friendly staff. Off for a walk around Mars hill near the Acropolis before going back to the hotel to check-out. It's Orthodox Easter this weekend, so lots of people around.

The Hera Hotel is in a great location near to the Acropolis and pedestrian street with lots of restaurants. Not fancy, but comfortable rooms and good breakfast. Very helpful and friendly staff. Most rooms have a balcony, but some like mine with no view.

Istanbul

  We transited through the Dardanelle Straights at night, but I woke up several times to see the lights in several towns and a huge bridge. In the morning we had reached the Sea of Marmara and were heading for Istanbul. A cloudy day but no rain so far. This is the coldest day we've had, only about 15C. There are a lot more ships here, mainly freighters. Istanbul is a huge city, about 16 million official inhabitants so it's very spread out. It's a very exciting sail in trying to spot some of the famous buildings like Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque. As we're circling around to dock the Moslem call to prayer is sounding all around us. We dock about 2pm, and shortly after get the all clear to go ashore. I'm doing a walking tour, though we are bused to the old part of the city to start it. Limassol Cyprus

 We had a bit of rock and roll last night, I felt it rocked me to sleep! My cabin location is fairly low and central, so pretty stable. A beautiful sunny day as we arrive into Limassol harbour. I had decided yesterday to book a shore excursion for Cyprus and I'm so glad I did! The drive to Omodos took about an hour, and went from the coastal plain through winding hills , terraced vineyards and small villages. Cyprus is divided between the Greeks and the Turks, we were on the Greek side. Omodos is one of many wine villages, and a popular spot for people from Limassol to come for Sunday brunch. It's really charming with it's winding streets, small shops and many restaurants. The Greek Orthodox church is very ornate and beautiful with some Russian icons and by tradition a piece of the rope that bound Jesus's wrists. Azamara Pursuit

We had a 1pm pick-up from our hotel to the cruise dock in Piraeus. About a half hour drive. We were quite early at check-in but they were all set up with the boarding process which of course is complicated because of Covid. We went through several steps, had our Covid tests (negative, yeah!) and checked in. The pier was experiencing internet problems, so longer than usual, but still onboard by 3pm. Cabins and luggage were ready too! I'm in a Veranda cabin, very well laid out and spacious especially for 1 person! After unpacking I toured the ship, similar to other Azamara ships I've seen, but a few updates. I really enjoy this size of ship (just under 700 passengers) Big enough to have everything you want, but not overwhelming. It's always interesting departing from Piraeus, so many different sizes of ferries and cruise ship. Masks are recommended inside when social distancing isn't possible.
